First call to triage

If you are told it may be too early

It may be appropriate to stay at home in early labour, but you can still ask clear questions and call again if anything changes or you do not feel reassured.

Your birth partner could say

I understand it may be early labour, but she is in severe distress and we do not feel safe or reassured managing this at home. Please can we come in for assessment or speak to the senior midwife?

Please record this

Please can you document the time we called, what we reported and the advice given?

The core question

What has been checked? What is the plan? When will this be reviewed again? Who is responsible for the next decision?

A note for the birth partner

Your role is not to panic or argue. Your role is to explain clearly, ask what happens next, write down the advice and call again if things change or you still feel worried.

You are allowed to ask for the reason, the plan, the review point and who is responsible for the next decision.
