BackUrgent help
Birth partner support

Your role is to help her be heard.

You do not need to know all the medical answers. Your role is to listen, stay calm, write things down and help clear questions be asked.

Ask

  • “What has changed?”
  • “What are you monitoring?”
  • “Who is responsible for the next decision?”
  • “When will we be reviewed again?”
  • “What would make this urgent?”

Write down

  • · Time
  • · Who you spoke to
  • · Concern raised
  • · What you were told
  • · Plan agreed
  • · When review is expected

Escalate

If she still feels worried, you could say:

“She is still worried and does not feel reassured. Please can this be reviewed by the senior midwife, obstetrician or doctor responsible?”

Stay steady

When things feel unclear, come back to the basics. What has been checked? What is the plan? When will she be reviewed again? Who is responsible for the next decision? Your calm voice can help keep the conversation focused.
