Changes in baby’s movements

If your baby’s movements are reduced, changed or have stopped, call your midwife or maternity unit immediately. Do not wait until tomorrow. Do not use a home doppler to reassure yourself, as hearing a heartbeat does not always mean your baby is well.

Your concern

My baby’s movements have changed

You do not need to justify calling. Any change in your baby’s pattern of movements is a reason to be assessed.

You could say

“My baby’s movements have changed and I would like to be checked as soon as possible. Please can you tell me where I need to come in, what checks will be done and who will review us?”

Questions to ask

  • Where should I come in?
  • Who will review us?
  • What checks will be done?
  • What should I do if movements change again?
  • When should I call back?
  • Can this concern be documented?

Ask for it to be documented

If you are worried, you can ask for your concern and the advice given to be recorded.

“Please can you record in my notes that I raised this concern, what I reported, what was checked and what the plan is?”

The core question

If you are worried and do not know what else to say, ask this.

“What has been checked? What is the plan? When will this be reviewed again? Who is responsible for the next decision?”

You are allowed to ask for the reason, the plan, the review point and who is responsible for the next decision.

Hear Her First does not tell you what clinical decision is right. It helps you ask clear questions, understand the plan and seek further review if you do not feel reassured.
